Volicon Observer Overtakes 1,000-Channel Mark

Industry-Leading Desktop Video-Monitoring System Doubles Delivered-Channel Count in Less Than a Year

Volicon, a leading provider of media monitoring, recording, archiving, and streaming solutions, today announced that it has shipped more than 1,000 Observer® channels to broadcasters around the world. Known for its round-the-clock reliability and robust functionality, the Observer desktop video-monitoring system has been recognized with numerous industry awards and by widespread adoption from television networks, media and entertainment companies, cable MSO’s and the corporate and government markets. Recent enhancements to the system have made the Observer’s technology available to the cable and satellite market, and to broadcasters requiring monitoring systems for HD content.

“In this industry, it’s not just reliability that’s critical in a video monitoring system; it is also the system’s capacity to enhance a facility’s overall productivity,” said Julius Perl, vice president of marketing at Volicon. “The rapid acceptance of the Observer and repeat purchases from existing customers demonstrate that users have found our solution offers the day-to-day dependability they need, along with superior functionality that supports greater efficiency across the company’s operations. The Observer integrates easily into existing environments and reduces the once-complex task of recording, storing, accessing reviewing, and sharing media as simple as a single button-click.”

Volicon’s Observer desktop video-monitoring solution makes multiple channels of content available on demand, live or archived, from any desktop, giving users across an organization the ability to search, retrieve, view, analyze, annotate, share, and export video from any location using a Microsoft Internet Explorer®-compatible interface. In addition to performing monitoring for regulatory compliance and ad verification, the Observer allows broadcasters and other companies to capture, view, and analyze multiple channels of content, whether it be their own aired content or that of competing stations.

The system’s intuitive Web-based GUI, which requires no training time, makes mission-critical video broadcasts and analysis available as work material. The system enables real-time searching of closed-caption text, even providing email alerts when tagged subjects or keywords are broadcast. Thus, captured media can be checked for quality assurance or used for correlative analysis alongside viewer ratings information. EPG (electronic program guide) data, as-run logs, and custom metadata can be linked to assets to improve workflow integration. The export functionality of the Observer lets operators share assets internally or repurpose them for external distribution via the Web or other platform.

The technology behind Volicon’s flagship Observer system is now available to users in the cable and satellite industry through the Observer RPM (Remote Program Monitor) family designed to monitor video and audio quality of service. The RPM family includes the RPM 200, RPM 400, and RPM 800. The RPM 800 offers powerful processing that increases the system’s channel scanning to a rate of 72 channels per minute, or the equivalent of a cable operator’s complete channel lineup within just five minutes. Observer RPM systems have been adopted by larger headends to evaluate all of their channels within a fraction of the time previously required.

The release of the Observer 4.0 earlier this year brought improvements including integrated SD and HD monitoring, SNMP support, LDAP authentication, transport stream analyzer interface, Teletext support, multilanguage closed-captioning, and a visual loudness meter, all of which help broadcasters make monitoring a more intuitive part of their operations.
