Japan’s KAB Purchases Volicon Observer Desktop Video Monitoring System

KAB Purchase Represents First Sale for New Volicon Japanese Reseller, HOEI

Volicon, a leading provider of media monitoring, recording, archiving, and streaming solutions, today announced that Japan’s KAB (Kumamoto Asahi Broadcaster) has purchased a single-channel Observer system to provide a permanent archive of all aired content and to verify compliance with government regulations and advertiser contracts. The Observer system is being deployed within KAB’s newly established digital broadcast facility in Kumamoto, located on Japan’s southernmost island, Kyushu.

“We were impressed with the Observer demonstration provided by HOEI because it illustrated how easily the system would enable us to meet government regulations and make the shift away from tape-based recording and archiving,” said Akihiro Shiraishi, technical officer in charge of transmission at Kumamoto Asahi Broadcasting. “We look forward to incorporating the Observer system into our new digital broadcast operations.”

Japanese government regulations require that all broadcasters maintain an archive of content aired during the previous three months. December 2006 was the country’s deadline for the launch of digital terrestrial broadcasting. As analog broadcasts are phased out approaching 2011, Japanese broadcasters are looking to decrease their reliance on analog systems and tape-based operations. The Observer facilitates this transition and will help KAB tap into the potential offered by digital recording, storage, and management of aired content.

“The Japanese broadcast market is in the midst of tremendous change, and the industry’s transition to digital opens up many new opportunities for the country’s broadcasters,” said Julius Perl, vice president of marketing at Volicon. “With the Observer installed within its digital facilities, KAB is poised not only to fulfill its regulatory obligations, but also to gain a competitive edge over other stations in its broadcast market.”

Based on a powerful, proprietary streaming video engine and player, the Observer gives a large number of users simultaneous access to multiple channels of live and archived content from their desktops using a Microsoft Internet Explorer Web interface. Users can log their own and competitors’ broadcasts, as well as search, retrieve, analyze, and export video clips with metadata, locally or remotely. The system archives instantly accessible content for up to a year via RAID-5 storage hardware.

The export functionality of the Observer makes it easy for operators to share assets internally or repurpose them for external distribution via the Web or other platforms. All of this functionality brings Observer users a new level of responsiveness in meeting the demands of viewers, regulatory agencies, and advertisers.
