JDSU to Offer Volicon’s Observer® RPM System

“The Observer RPM provides audio and video monitoring beyond the set-top box, and this capability augments the JSDU goal of continuous and proactive end-to-end visibility from ‘headend through the home’”

Volicon, a leading provider of media monitoring, recording, archiving, and streaming solutions, today announced that JDSU has been named as the exclusive worldwide reseller of the Observer® RPM (Remote Program Monitor) product. JDSU is the premier supplier of broadband test and measurement solutions and optical products for communications, commercial, and consumer markets. Through this new agreement with Volicon, JDSU enhances its ability to deliver end-to-end Quality of Service (QoS) monitoring solutions optimized for IPTV and digital video applications in telco and cable operators.

“The Observer RPM provides audio and video monitoring beyond the set-top box, and this capability augments the JSDU goal of continuous and proactive end-to-end visibility from ‘headend through the home,’” said Paul Antolli, vice president of JDSU’s Complementary Products organization. “With Volicon’s Observer RPM, our customers achieve service visibility through to the media consumer, and this awareness is critical to the maintenance and availability of media delivery services.”

Volicon’s Observer RPM system gives users the ability to take a more proactive approach to quality assurance while simplifying the monitoring workflow. The system automates the channel-scanning process, operating unattended as it continuously scans hundreds of video channels — and multiple channels simultaneously — to verify the presence of video and audio and to detect problems such as frozen video, black video, loss of video signal, and low-level audio.

For most providers of multichannel services, an eight-channel Observer RPM system can scan the complete channel map in approximately seven minutes. In the event that audio or video problems are revealed, the system delivers alerts to technicians, who then can correct problems before subscribers discover them. In addition to providing alerts, the Observer RPM can record the content in question for later review or stream the questionable channel over the network, enabling a technician to view video and audio on a standard Windows-based PC.

An advanced desktop video monitoring solution, the Observer RPM system features intuitive interfaces and capabilities for comprehensive video and audio quality assurance. Users have total video control with the ability to search, retrieve, view, analyze, annotate, share, and export video from the desktop.

“The Observer RPM is the first product of this class being deployed by cable, telco, and IPTV operators, and as such it fits nicely into the highly regarded suite of broadband test products offered by JDSU,” said Julius Perl, vice president of marketing at Volicon. “We’re confident that this relationship will enable further penetration of our leading monitoring technologies within the valuable core markets served by JDSU.”
