Raycom Media Establishes Centralized Station Monitoring With Volicon Observer

Volicon’s Central Observer Enables Web-Based Monitoring of All 30 Raycom Station Sites at Any Time, From Anywhere

Volicon, a leading provider of media monitoring, recording, archiving, and streaming solutions, today announced that Raycom Media, one of the nation’s largest broadcasters, has completed the installation of Volicon Observer systems at 30 Raycom-owned stations throughout the United States. Raycom also purchased a Volicon Observer Central Monitoring system, the first to be deployed, to enable monitoring of all of the company’s geographically dispersed stations through a single Web-based interface at any time, from anywhere. “Observer gives us powerful new tools for improving our business at both the group and station level,” said Dave Folsom, vice president of technology and CTO at Raycom.

“Corporate officers and outside consultants can easily view all of our stations and get directly involved without each station having to go through the expense and effort of sending tapes, DVDs, or video clips. We use the Observer Central Monitoring system to provide station group executives and consultants with immediate and comprehensive access to all of Raycom’s broadcast stations. The Observer solution has been a perfect fit for us, both in function and budget.”

The Raycom station group uses the centralized monitoring configuration to evaluate broadcast elements ranging from on-air talent to corporate image and use of graphics. The Volicon Observer Central allows corporate officers and outside consultants to view all stations with ease and get directly involved without each station incurring the expense and effort of sending tapes, DVDs, or video clips.

Individual Raycom stations use their Observer systems as an FCC-approved source of programming backup and proof for any compliance or advertiser inquiries. Observer offers each station the tools needed to review and improve the on-air product. The system generates alerts for technical problems and targeted closed-caption keywords, exports video clips, and archives the station’s broadcast without the expense or hassle of manual recording to tape or saving to DVD. Volicon’s Observer also allows stations to record their competitors in the market and compare their performance.

“Raycom’s enterprise-wide adoption of the Observer system for central monitoring demonstrates the benefits our technology can provide to geographically dispersed broadcast facilities such as Raycom’s. We’re pleased to see the Observer integrated into Raycom operations and the company’s overall growth strategy,” said Eli Warsawski, Volicon’s president and CEO.

Based on a powerful, proprietary streaming video engine and player, the Observer allows a large number of users simultaneous access to multiple channels of live and archived content from their desktop using a Microsoft Internet Explorer Web interface. Users can log their own and competitors’ broadcasts, as well as search, retrieve, analyze, and export video clips with metadata, locally or remotely. The system archives instantly accessible
content for up to a year via hardware RAID-5 storage.
