Volicon’s Powerful New Observer RPM 800 Enables High-Speed Channel Scanning at Cable Headends & MS

Robust New Observer RPM 800 Scans at a Very Fast 72 Channels per Minute

Volicon, a leading provider of media monitoring, recording, archiving, and streaming solutions, today announced the release of the Observer RPM 800. This newest addition to the Observer RPM (Remote Program Monitor) family offers all the functionality for which the RPM 200 and RPM 400 are known, backed by powerful processing that increases the system’s channel scanning to a rate of 72 channels per minute, or the equivalent of cable operators’ complete channel lineup within just five minutes.

“The broadcast and cable market is highly competitive, and digital monitoring of the on-air broadcast has become a vital tool in ensuring the quality and integrity of signals delivered to viewers,” said Julius Perl, Volicon’s vice president of marketing. “With the Observer RPM 800, we’re providing a new level of speed and, in turn, enabling MSO and cable operators to be faster and more proactive in responding to channel failures.”

Packaged in a 3-RU chassis, the Observer RPM 800 cuts 350-channel scanning time from half an hour down to a mere five minutes. Thus, larger headends now can evaluate all of their channels within a fraction of the time previously required. The Observer RPM 800 is based on the technology employed in Volicon’s award-winning Observer broadcast monitoring system. It monitors and records hundreds of video channels for audio and video signal integrity and notifies the operator, by email or SMS alerts, if the signal does not conform to prespecified limits.

Monitoring includes detection of low audio levels, frozen video, and missing video. In addition to providing instant alerts, the Observer RPM records, logs, and streams the content in question for later review by the operator. By delivering the questionable TV channel over the Internet, the Volicon monitoring system enables remote evaluation and troubleshooting of audio and video issues through a Windows®-based PC. This capability helps MSOs and cable operators monitor the quality of their broadcasts in central and remote unstaffed headend facilities.
