Volicon Observer® RPM Enables Efficient Quality Assurance at Sunflower Broadband

“Cable operators industrywide are more focused on quality assurance and on taking a more proactive approach to monitoring. We do a very good job of getting alarms from telephone and data devices that are down, but to do the same for our channel map, we would have to assign a live body to scan all of our channels manually, all of the time. The Observer RPM automates this process, allowing us to dedicate technicians to other projects while improving customer satisfaction. It fit all our needs and proved very affordable compared with competing solutions.”

Volicon, a leading provider of media monitoring, recording, archiving, and streaming solutions, today announced that Lawrence, Kan.-based Sunflower Broadband is using the Observer® RPM 400 to scan more than 200 channels within the company’s channel map. Volicon’s Observer RPM (Remote Program Monitor) system allows Sunflower Broadband to extend its automated monitoring capability to include detection and alerting of audio and video problems.

“Cable operators industrywide are more focused on quality assurance and on taking a more proactive approach to monitoring,” said Gregg Gehlbach, network operations center manager for Sunflower Broadband. “We do a very good job of getting alarms from telephone and data devices that are down, but to do the same for our channel map, we would have to assign a live body to scan all of our channels manually, all of the time. The Observer RPM automates this process, allowing us to dedicate technicians to other projects while improving customer satisfaction. It fit all our needs and proved very affordable compared with competing solutions.”

The Observer RPM automates the channel-scanning process, operating unattended as it scans hundreds of video channels continuously — and multiple channels simultaneously — to verify the presence of video and audio and to detect problems such as frozen video, black video, loss of video signal, and low-level audio. The four-channel system at Sunflower Broadband scans the complete channel map in approximately 15 minutes and delivers alerts of audio or video problems so that technicians can correct problems before they’re discovered by subscribers. In addition to providing alerts, the Observer RPM can record the content in question for later review or stream the questionable TV channel over the network, enabling a technician to view video and audio on a standard Windows-based PC.

An advanced desktop video monitoring solution, Observer RPM systems feature intuitive interfaces and capabilities for comprehensive video and audio quality assurance. Users have total video control with the ability to search, retrieve, view, analyze, annotate, share, and export video from the desktop.
