Volicon and Triveni Digital Partner to Offer Comprehensive Monitoring of Digital Television Streams

Firms partner to deliver comprehensive monitoring and analysis of digital video streams

Volicon and Triveni Digital have integrated their industry-leading broadcast monitoring technologies to provide comprehensive analysis of digital video streams. The combination of the Volicon Observer® RPM multichannel signal monitoring system and Triveni Digital StreamScope™ RM-40 remote monitoring and analysis solution allows cable operators to establish previously undetected correlations between problems in the MPEG transport stream and impairments in video delivered to viewers.

“The Observer system helps cable operators achieve a better visual understanding of how select types of MPEG problems detected by our StreamScope RM-40 monitoring and analysis system affect the viewer experience,” said Ralph Bachofen, director of product management and marketing at Triveni Digital. “This helps operators determine what kinds of problems are likely to result in complaint calls.”

“We established the Observer RPM system to mimic the behavior of a television viewer switching from channel to channel,” said Julius Perl, vice president of marketing at Volicon. “Integration of the Observer RPM with the StreamScope RM-40 allows us to perform a deeper analysis that ties the health of the stream to the way it presents on screen. In essence, our technology provides the qualitative information to expand on the quantitative data supplied by Triveni Digital’s stream analyzer.”

The real-time StreamScope RM-40 system from Triveni Digital remotely monitors, measures, records, and analyzes DTV streams to ensure their integrity, reliability, and compliance with standards. Interfaces to Triveni Digital’s GuideBuilder™ metadata management system and a Business Intent Assurance feature validate that the streams are well formed from a standards perspective and automatically guarantee that they comply with the business model of the broadcaster.

The Observer RPM enables cable operators to monitor the signal quality for hundreds of channels at both central and remote head-end facilities automatically and around-the-clock. The system can monitor and log the audio and video of more than 500 channels simultaneously. By identifying and evaluating the severity and cause of failure, the Observer RPM can eliminate the need to send a technician to a remote site. When faults are detected, the system generates an alert and records the problematic channel for closer scrutiny and analysis. Channels also can be streamed for remote viewing and analysis.

Integration between the StreamScope RM-40 and the Observer RPM allows an understanding of the impact of MPEG stream impairments on the viewer experience. When the StreamScope RM-40 detects transport problems that could affect the decoding of content, it triggers the Observer RPM to record a clip of the problematic channel, using receivers typical for that delivery system. Correlation between stream impairments and actual viewing quality allows the system operator to streamline operations by prioritizing focus on issues that affect the viewer.

The Volicon/Triveni Digital combination is available now via the companies’ reseller networks. Information about Triveni Digital products is available at http://www.trivenidigital.com.
