NAB 2008: Booth N2514
Quality of service and quality of experience have never been more important to broadcasters and cable operators, who today face growing competitive pressure to convert to fully digital operations and provide high definition offerings to discriminating viewers. The industry standard for video monitoring and logging, Volicon Observer gives broadcasters a powerful, competitive weapon by enabling them to deliver the highest quality viewing experience possible. The Observer is an advanced desktop media monitoring solution that captures, stores, and indexes broadcast content from multiple channels, offering users simultaneous, 24/7 access to video from their desktop computers.
At the 2008 NAB Show, Volicon will introduce a number of new products and extensions to the Observer, including a new version of the Observer HD, as well as features that maximize broadcasters’ ability to monitor remote stations, detect transmission errors, and re-purpose video content.
Observer Quality of Experience Module
Volicon will announce a new Quality of Experience Module for the Observer that automatically detects macro-blocking or “pixelization” of the image due to video stream errors or overcompression. With the QoE Module, the Observer is the industry’s first video monitoring solution to provide an automated method for analyzing a video image to detect macro-blocking, which has traditionally required human intervention to spot the on-screen anomalies.
Observer Edge
Volicon is introducing the Observer Edge, a cost-effective video monitoring solution for remote and unmanned “dark” stations. The Observer Edge offers a subset of the core Observer functionality that enables MSOs and station groups to ensure quality of service for remote transmitters, translators, or stations running in automated mode. The Observer Edge continuously monitors video output at the remote station and transmits quality data to a central server. When the system detects a video or audio fault, it automatically sends a clip demonstrating the error to the operator on duty for resolution.
Observer HD 2.0
At the 2008 NAB Show, Volicon will announce and demonstrate version 2.0 of the Observer HD, the broadcast industry’s first product to provide high definition signal logging and monitoring capabilities. The Observer HD provides support for Dolby® 5.1 sound and enables recording on two or four channels, with storage for 30 days or longer. With version 2.0, Volicon will be extending the Observer HD’s Dolby 5.1 capabilities to support capture of SDI content. Other new features include HD capture of CEA-708 closed captions (EIA-608 transport extraction), support of bit rates higher than 3 Mbps, alerting support through SNMP, and GPI contact closure upon alert.
